Movie Review: The Matrix (1999)

In 2019 I found some old Word documents with movie reviews I wrote back before I had a blog. I’m posting each review backdated to the day I wrote it.

Title: The Matrix
Release Date: March 31, 1999
Director: The Wachowskis
Production Company: Warner Bros. | Village Roadshow Pictures | Groucho II Film Partnership | Silver Pictures
Summary/Review:

Not what I expected, but still not as great as advertised.  I particularly liked the early parts of the film where the history of the matrix is explained, and the philosophy of opposing it and personal choice are discussed.  The scene with the Oracle is particularly well done.  The training scenes are fun too.  The big battle scenes with firearms being emptied and disposed are dull and senseless.  Its particularly disappointing due to the fact that a good premise is undermined the failure to adhere to the internal logic of the film.  Anything that allows our heroes to wear cool clothes and kick ass takes precedence over anything that makes a good story.

Rating: **
