Beer Review: Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy

Comments:  I’ve reviewed a couple of Leinenkugel beers before and found them a bit too sweet for my tastes.  Yet on a sunny summer Sunday afternoon I was drawn to the Summer Shandy.  Shandy is basically lemonade mixed with beer so I expected it to be sweet as well, which it is, but surprisingly it’s more balanced than the other Leinie’s brands.  It was just the thing to refresh a dry throat and keep my sweet tooth happy too.

  1. My only disappointment with Summer Shandy is its limited availability. Not only are distributors who carry it few and far between; so too are the months that it’s sold. Understandable if you live in the cold, short-summered north but from the Mid-Atlantic south it would be wonderful to have a Shandy on one of those unbearably hot April or October days.

Prior to discovering Shandy I had the pleasure of drinking a lemonadebeer in Dresden, Germany – the result of a language barrier. We had been accustomed to drinking wheat beers with either orange or lemon slices and thought we’d have one in the heart of Wheat Beer country. The delivered treat was most refreshing even in December. Of course, they are probably still chuckling about those crazy American tourists.
