  1. Our local public library allows us to pick up our own holds, and we also have self-checkout terminals. The books on the holds shelf are placed spine-down and they’re pretty well packed together so that it’s very difficult to see anyone else’s book unless you’re really trying. But somehow (oh dear, how?) you have to walk from the holds shelf to the self-checkout machine and then out of the library with no one seeing your book…
