Movie Review: Waking Ned Devine (1998)

Title: Waking Ned Devine
Release Date: 1998
Director: Kirk Jones
Summary/Review: A quirky comedy set in a small, isolated village on the Irish coast, in which two old friends learn that a winning lottery ticket was sold in the village and they scheme to find the winner. They eventually learn that the titular Ned Devine is the winner but he died of shock while still holding the ticket.  So they decide to pose as Ned to claim the prize.

What follows is a mix of dark comedy, some melancholy moments, and elderly men riding a motorcycle in the nude. There are some dull subplots that feel contrived but the main story is a clever farce (although I was troubled that the solution to the village curmudgeon is killing her).
Rating: ***
