JP A to Z: E is for English High #AtoZChallenge #JamaicaPlain

E is for English High

I lived elsewhere when I attended high school and my children are still young, but the English High School still plays a central role in our lives and our neighborhood.  The kids go to soccer practice on the fields and practice biking on the track, the bus to summer camp stops there, and there are many important community meetings in the auditorium.

Here are some interesting facts about this historic school:

  • Founded in 1821, it is America’s oldest public high school.
  • The name “English” set it apart from the Boston Latin School as the school was designed to give a solid education to children who would not be going on the universities.
  • Their nickname is the “Blue & Blue” because the schools colors are Columbia Blue and Navy Blue.  I really like blue, so this makes me happy.
  • English High moved into their current location, a renovated Boston Gas Co. office building, in 1989.
