Beer Review: Samuel Adams Grumpy Monk

Beer: Samuel Adams Grumpy Monk
Brewer: Boston Beer Company

Rating: ** (6.1 of 10)
Comments:  Sampled on tap at Doyle’s Cafe in Jamaica Plain, probably the best location to try fresh, new Samuel Adams’ beers.  There was a thin head on the beer which had a copper tone.  The aroma is very mild, maybe some yeast and banana scents.  The flavor is a balance of hops and malts, but not consistent.  I like it better at first when I could taste the hops, but they weren’t overpowering in their bitterness.  The finish is bready with a mouth feel that is too thick and sticky for my tastes.  I couldn’t figure out what this beer wanted to be, but it was all right for a change of pace.

Beer Review: Harpoon The Long Thaw

Beer: The Long Thaw White IPA
Brewer: Harpoon Brewery
Source: 12 oz bottle
Rating: *** (7 of 10)
Comments: Pours out cloudy blonde with a medium head. The scent is grassy with hints of citrus.  The taste of this beer is earthy followed by a hop explosion.  This beer is smooth and drinkable and a worthy addition to the Harpoon lineup.

Beer Review: Harpoon White IPA

Beer: Harpoon White IPA
Brewer: Harpoon Brewery
Source: 22 oz. bottle
Rating: *** (7.3 of 10)
Comments: Boston’s Harpoon Brewery continues their 100 Barrel Series with this Belgian IPA, a blend of a Belgian Wit with an American IPA.    The beer is cloudy and golden in appearance with a thick golden head.  It gives off a floral aroma and the taste is of bitter spice with orange and citrus flavors.  Another good beer from the Bay State.

Beer Review: Saranac White IPA

Comments:
Surprisingly this beer pours out with a thick head and cloudy, golden body looking all the world like a hefeweizen.  It’s a hoppy beer with some spiciness but it felt understated to me.  I could have used more flavor.  Other than that, it is a cheerful beer with a fruity aroma and stands out as something unique.
