Thoughts:
Lovesexy is a concept album focusing on two of Prince’s favorite topics – God and sex – and a struggle between good and evil. Original releases of the CD sequenced all nine songs as a single track. Musically it sounds like a return to the sexy funk of Dirty Minds and Controversy, although is there a bit of early New Jack Swing in there as well? Rap is also a significant addition for the first time, most prominently Cat Glover’s verse on “Alphabet St.” As far as the charts go, this album saw the end of Prince’s imperial phase although it still sold well by non-Prince standards.
