Movie Review: No One Will Save You (2023)

Title: No One Will Save You
Release Date: September 19, 2023
Director: Brian Duffield
Production Company: 20th Century Studios | Star Thrower Entertainment
Summary/Review:

Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) is a young woman who lives alone in a house on the outskirts of a town who earns money by selling the dresses she makes by mail.  She has severe social anxiety and it appears to be justified since when she visits town everyone appears to be hostile towards her.  One night a creature invades her house, a classic tall and slender grey alien with telekinetic powers.  Brynn spends most of the film fighting and escaping these aliens who in the style of Invasion of the Body Snatchers are controlling and duplicating the other humans.

Underneath the gripping drama of Brynn’s struggle with the aliens is the secret trauma of her past.  This is slowly revealed and begins to explain Brynn’s circumstances and will ultimately decide her fate with the aliens.  It’s a terrific use of traditional sci-fi/horror motifs to relate to the burdens of trauma and the need for self-forgiveness.  Dever’s performance is compelling especially considering there is almost no spoken dialogue in this movie.  This is definitely worth checking out if you like horror movies with a twist.

Note: I have some spoiler thoughts about the films conclusion that I’ve hidden below the trailer.

Rating: ***1/2

DEEP DIVES – Album Review: Plectrumelectrum by Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL and Art Official Age by Prince

I am doing a deep dive into the work of the musical artist Prince.  Each week until December I will post my thoughts on albums released by Prince (and his bands and side projects) focusing on one year of his career.

After a 4 year absence, the longest gap between albums in Prince’s career, he returned in 2014 with the simultaneous release of two albums: Plectrumelectrum (with his all-woman touring band 3RDEYEGIRL) and Art Official Age.

Album: Plectrumelectrum
Artist: Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL
Release Date: September 26, 2014
Label: NPG | Warner Bros.
Favorite Tracks:

  • Pretzelbodylogic
  • Plectrumelectrum
  • Anotherlove
  • Marz
  • Funknroll

Thoughts: In his final years, Prince toured with 3RDEYEGIRL, a trio consisting of  drummer Hannah Welton, guitarist Donna Grantis and bassist Ida Kristine Nielsen. Working with a small combo seems to have reinvigorated Prince and gives his music more of a hard rock edge than has been heard before.  A pre-fame Lizzo also appears on the track “Boytrouble.”  If it isn’t quite a return to Prince’s golden era, it definitely has the fun and creativity to make it among the best of his late era albums.

Album: Art Official Age
Artist: Prince
Release Date: September 26, 2014
Label: NPG | Warner Bros.
Favorite Tracks:

  • Art Official Cage
  • The Gold Standard
  • Breakfast Can Wait
  • What It Feels Like
  • Funknroll
  • Time
  • affirmation III

Thoughts: On his solo outing (which features several supporting artists, including 3RDEYEGIRL), Prince ventures into contemporary sounds in electronic dance music and R&B.  While Prince is always best when he’s the innovator rather than the imitator, nevertheless this album feels fresh as he incorporates the new sounds into his template.
